How many hours a week can I work part-time?

Students on D-2 (study) and D-4 (language training) visas need permission before working. Get confirmation from your school's staff, then apply for a part-time work permit (시간제 취업 허가) at an immigration office (출입국·외국인관서). Language students must wait 6 months from their entry date or status change date.

Allowed hours depend on your program and Korean level.

  • Associate degree, bachelor's year 1~2: with TOPIK level 3 or higher, 25 hours a week on weekdays
  • Bachelor's year 3~4: with TOPIK level 4 or higher, 25 hours a week on weekdays
  • Master's, doctorate: with TOPIK level 4 or higher, 30 hours a week on weekdays
  • If you don't meet the standard: 10 hours a week (15 hours for master's and doctorate)

If you meet the standard, there is no hour limit on weekends and during vacations. Language students should ask their school or 1345 about hours. Some jobs are not allowed, such as delivery riders. If your workplace changes, report it within 15 days.

Other visas are different. Marriage migrants (F-6) and permanent residents (F-5) have no job restrictions based on their status. Non-professional workers (E-9) can only work at their designated workplace.

Working without permission can lead to up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won, and deportation.

Be sure to check your own situation with 1345 or an immigration office.
