When, where, and how do I extend my stay?
You must apply before your period of stay ends. Government guidance says you can apply from 4 months before it expires. Another notice says online applications run from 60 days to 3 days before expiry (excluding holidays). Ask 1345 about your dates first.
There are two ways to apply.
- In person: go to an immigration office (출입국·외국인관서). Book a visit on HiKorea first.
- Online: use HiKorea online services (하이코리아 전자민원). Accepted on weekdays 07:00~22:00. Some statuses can only apply in person.
You need an application form, passport, ARC, and proof of residence. For documents specific to your status, check the status guide manual on HiKorea (체류자격별 안내 매뉴얼).
The fee is 60,000 won. F-6 (marriage) is 30,000 won. Online applications get a 20% fee reduction.
If you owe taxes or health insurance premiums, your extension may be limited.
If you overstay without permission, you could face up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won, and deportation.
Be sure to check your own situation with 1345 or an immigration office.
